Reducing Infant Mortality in the U.S.

A recent study published in the journal PLOS Medicine shows that while the United States has made progress over the past decade in reducing the number of newborn deaths, considerable work still remains to be done as evidenced by a neonatal mortality rate in the U.S. that is higher than that of many other industrialized nations due to premature births, lack of prenatal care, high rates of obesity and inadequate preventive health care. PLOS Medicine is an open-access medical journal that provides a venue for research and comment on the major challenges to human health worldwide.

Being a successful celebrity these days involves a lot more work than might be apparent at first glance. Not only do you have to be totally fabulous looking and completely occupied doing fabulous things in fabulous places, it appears today’s modern celebrities must also give their children some very unusual names to make sure they are set apart from the less-than-fabulous children of regular, non-celebrity type parents. As a result, the Hollywood crowd sometimes seems to be in a competition for the weirdest baby names.

A fertility expert told the annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Stockholm, Sweden that women who want to have a baby should take care of their oral health because a preliminary research study shows that when a woman starts trying to conceive, her chances of becoming pregnant can partially depend on just how well she looks after her teeth and gums.

A national study published in the Environmental Science & Technology Journal examined over 100 different foam baby products, and found that 80% of them contained traces of flame retardant chemical compounds that have been shown to present health risks to humans. The items that were tested included changing pads, nursing pillows, crib wedges and bassinet mattresses from across the United States.

London’s Telegraph news service recently reported the disturbing news that scientists from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Sherbrooke Hospital Centre in Quebec, Canada conducted studies where they found toxic pesticides from genetically modified food crops in the blood of pregnant women and their unborn babies. The research also showed that the toxins were present in nearly everyone tested, with 93% of the pregnant mothers and 80% of the umbilical cords showing traces of the pesticides.

When parents are faced with the responsibility of caring for a sick baby, it is natural for them to want to deal with any illness as quickly and completely as possible. Parents will try to protect their baby as much as possible from any sickness but they also need to strike a balance between allowing the sickness to run its natural course and taking the child to the doctor at the hint of an ailment.
